How to not be nervous on a date

Date nerves do not mean something will go wrong — they mean you care. And they almost always come from the same place: not knowing what you will say. That is fixed by rehearsing, not by hoping.

Why you get nervous (the good news)

Date nerves are almost always one thing: no script. Conversation is the part you cannot control, and your brain knows it. The classic advice — breathe, exercise, water — helps the body but does not touch the cause. The cause is fixed by preparing material, not by counting sheep.

The 5-minute method

  1. Prepare three topics you enjoy talking about: a short story, a defensible opinion, a plan that excites you. Do not memorize them — keep them handy.
  2. Rehearse out loud for two minutes: how you would tell your story, and how you would answer a “what about you?”. It feels ridiculous and it works anyway.
  3. Redefine your goal: not “make them like me” but “have a good conversation for an hour”. Lowering the goal lowers the nerves.

On the date: the 60/40 rule

Aim to listen 60% and talk 40%. Nerves push you to overtalk or under-talk — the first-date questions page gives you material for the 60% without it feeling like an interrogation. And if your mind blanks, saying so is allowed: “lost my train of thought, give me a second” is human and breaks the tension.

What does not help

  • Liquid courage. It shows, it feels, and it mutes your best material.
  • Rehearsing answers word for word. It plays like a recording once the conversation swerves.
  • Studying their profile ten minutes before. You already know it — walk in with what you have.

Is it normal to be nervous before a date?

Completely — it means the outcome matters to you. The goal is not to erase nerves; it is to stop them from directing the conversation.

What if I go blank mid-date?

Two exits: return to the last topic that made them smile, or say it out loud with humor (“lost my train of thought — worth it for the dramatic pause”).

Is the other person nervous too?

Often yes, even when it does not show. Seeing it as two people meeting instead of an exam changes the entire tone of the date.

Rehearse your date out loud, 5 minutes before

Koqeto simulates the conversation with you by voice: practice your story, the pauses and the improvised answers. You walk in having already run the dialogue once.
