How to respond to an Instagram story

Food stories

They picked the restaurant, you pick the question. React to the dish, not the person:

• “Okay, where is that from? I need a verdict before I add it to my list.”
• “Posting food at this hour should be illegal. Where is it?”
• “Rate it out of ten — my appetite trusts you now.”
• “That looks like a date-worthy place. I know a guy who would love to take you.”

Travel stories

• “That view is unreal. Recent trip or a proud throwback?”
• “Posting this while I am stuck in traffic should be a crime. Take me next time.”
• “Where is that exactly? Asking so I can plan a trip and report back.”
• “You travel like someone who would be fun to get lost with.”

Selfie stories

• “Stopping my scroll to say: okay, we see you.”
• “I was going to reply with an emoji, but you earned actual words. Hi.”
• “You knew exactly what you were doing with that one, did not you?”
• “You look happy — good week?”

Pet stories

• “I need the full introduction: name, age, and whether they tolerate mornings.”
• “Does the pet approve of new people? Asking for me.”

Music and meme stories

• “Current obsession or all-time classic?”
• “This meme is now our inside joke. I do not make the rules.”

Is it weird to reply to every story?

One reply that lands beats five reactions. If they post several stories a day, pick the one you can say something specific about and let the rest pass — presence is good, surveillance is not.

If they answer with just “haha”

Do not panic and do not stack messages. “Haha” means they saw you; the next move is one easy question about something they shared, ideally on the same topic as the story. If two story replies in a row get nothing but “haha”, the door is heavy — leave it for a while.

Story reply or DM?

Reply to the story first: it is public-adjacent, low pressure, and it references something they chose to share. A cold DM that says “hey” competes with everyone; a story reply competes with nobody. Once the story exchange is flowing, continue it in the DMs naturally.

Emoji reaction or written message?

An emoji reaction is a wave from across the street; a written reply is a conversation. React if you have nothing yet, write the moment you have something specific to say.

How long do I have to reply to a story?

Stories live 24 hours, but there is no countdown penalty. Reply while it is fresh (same day) and the topic still feels alive — a two-day-old story reply reads as an archive dig.

What if they do not answer my story reply?

One unanswered story reply is noise, two is information. Give it space, then try a different story type or a different door entirely — never a follow-up asking why they ignored it.
